General questions
These questions will give you a sense of the information needed to write a policy.
We will need to know:
Who are the people that are being supported? What needs do they have? Are they children or adults?
Where do you support them? (For example, in their own home/at supported living facilities/residential care/schools, etc.)
What services and support do you provide to the people being cared for? (For example, personal care, healthcare treatment, talking therapies or counselling, education, etc.)
Are you registered with the HIQA/ETI or equivalent?
Do Local Authorities provide funding to you and is this sufficient to support the people you look after?
Let’s get specific
These are the kinds of detailed questions we will ask to better understand day-to-day operations.
We will need to understand what fire protections there are.
Are any of the buildings listed premises or unoccupied?
Are there any commercial laundry facilities on site?
Are there any commercial cooking facilities and, if so, is fire suppression fitted?
Do you use agency staff or volunteers?
Do all staff have a documented training plan?
Do you provide training to all staff on the best practices for de-escalation and restraint?
Do all staff complete a medical questionnaire prior to employment?
How many people do you support?
What is the maximum and minimum staff to service user ratio?
Do you offer domiciliary care or supported living?
How many of the people you support are non-verbal or non-mobile?
Do you support people with a history of violence, sexual offences or arson?
Do you accept emergency placements?
Do you carry out Garda vetting (or other regional equivalent) on all staff?
Do you have written guidelines relating to the protection of children and vulnerable adults?
Do you provide training to all staff on your policies and procedures relating to safeguarding?
Do you investigate all allegations of abuse?
Do you have any substantiated allegations of abuse?
